Finding a Protein Shake That Works With a GLP-1

Finding a Protein Shake That Works With a GLP-1

If you're taking a GLP-1 medication, you've probably had this experience. You know you should be getting more protein. You've bought the shake from the pharmacy, the one that shows the big protein number on the front. And then you couldn't quite finish it, because it was a little sickly sweet, a bit too chalky, or it left you feeling more bloated than before.

Here's the truth. You're not doing anything wrong and you're not alone. This is one of the common frustrations we hear at Enlighten Me.

So let's walk through why nourishing yourself can feel harder on these medications, why some shakes can make it feel worse rather than better, and what may actually help when your appetite has changed.

Β

Why Nutrition Can Feel Harder On These Medications

GLP-1 medications (the group of glucagon-like peptide-1 therapies that includes the well-known weight management injectables) work largely by reducing one's appetite. For many people, the feature of quieter food noise can feel like an absolute relief.

But it's not simply about eating less. A person's whole experience of eating can often change. Dr Angela Kwong often explains it to her patients in this way: these medications don't only turn down one's hunger. They also make the stomach move in slow motion, signal to the brain that you're feeling fuller earlier, and can make richer foods feel heavier than they used to.

In practice, the people that we support often notice a few things at once:

  • Usual portions can feel impossible to finish
  • Hunger goes quiet, so meals often get skipped or forgotten
  • Heavier or richer foods can feel less comfortable
  • Eating becomes irregular, which makes energy harder to keep steady

But here's the part that matters most. Eating less doesn't mean that your body needs less. You still need enough protein to help maintain muscle as you lose weight, along with the essential vitamins, minerals and fibre that keep your energy steady. When you only feel like eating a small amount, meeting those needs from whole foods alone can be genuinely hard. And that's where a balanced shake can help fill the gap.

Nutrition is only one part of the picture. Depending on your circumstances, support from your regular GP, dietitian or other members of your healthcare team can help too.

Why Some Shakes Can Make It Harder

Now, this part is rarely talked about. When your appetite is low and digestion feels sensitive, a shake that doesn't quite suit can actually add to the problem rather than easing it. Different products suit different people, and what works well for one person may not necessarily suit another.

A couple of things come up time and time again.

The first is sweetness and texture. When food already feels less appealing, an intensely sweet or chalky shake is one of the first things people put down. It's very hard to drink something that makes your stomach feel unsettled.

The second is the ingredients list. It's really important to look past the big protein number on the front of the product and read the detail on the back, particularly for those who are juggling sensitive digestion. Key things to look out for can include maltodextrin, inulin and sugar alcohols. These are the sweeteners that often end in "-ol," such as sorbitol, maltitol and xylitol. For many people, these can contribute to excess bloating and abdominal discomfort, the very things that you are hoping to avoid.

What To Look For In A Shake When Your Appetite Has Changed

Whether or not the Enlighten Me shake turns out to be the right choice for you, here are some simple questions worth asking:

  • Is it genuinely easy to digest, and does it have a low FODMAP certification?
  • Are there few or no bulking fillers and sugar alcohols?
  • Is there good-quality protein, in a form that's easier for you to tolerate?
  • Is it lower in carbs and sugars?
  • Is it lighter in flavour, so you can actually finish it on a low-appetite day?

Β

Why We Created Enlighten Me

Enlighten Me was created by our founder, Dr Angela Kwong, a Sydney-based GP with a specific interest in weight management and digestive health. The shake didn't start as a product idea, it started in the consulting room, with patients who simply couldn't find something that worked for them.

"Many of my patients who were taking GLP-1 therapies were only tolerating 30 to 50% of their usual appetite, and they were struggling to get in enough protein. The traditional shakes on the shelf were unfortunately full of fillers and sugar alcohols that unsettled their stomach even more. This led us to the drawing board together." - Dr Angela Kwong, GP and Founder

That's the very reason the formula looks and works the way it does.

How We Approached The Enlighten Me Shake

Every decision in the formulation came back to one question. Would this be easier for someone whose appetite had changed?

Easier to finish. We kept the flavour light, not a dessert level of sweetness, so it's manageable on a day when you don't feel like much. It's certified FODMAP Friendly and gluten-free, and made with low-lactose whey.

Enough protein to matter. Each serve has 32g of protein, roughly a palm-sized serving, to help you meet your needs as part of supporting muscle mass during weight management, with carbohydrates kept consciously low.

Simple, considered ingredients. We've left out the common bulking fillers and artificial sweeteners, so you won't see any maltodextrin, inulin, sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners.

Flexible for everyday use. It's quick and easy to enjoy on its own, or great inside a smoothie with berries, mixed or flavoured with coffee or a little cinnamon, or enjoyed in one of our delicious recipes such as protein pancakes, protein bars or protein balls.

This is simply nutrition that we've made easier for everyday Australians to enjoy when their appetite has changed.

A Few Questions We're Often Asked

Can I use this shake alongside my medication? For many people, a meal replacement shake can be used as part of their nutrition while taking a GLP-1 medication, but it's always worth checking with your own doctor or healthcare team. It was originally created with this in mind, to help people fill the gaps and continue meeting their protein, vitamin, mineral and fibre needs when their appetite was low.

Why lower in carbohydrate? Many shakes contain almost as much sugar and carbohydrate as they do protein. This is one of the few that deliberately keeps a higher ratio of protein to a lower portion of carbohydrates, by leaving out fillers and added sugars. That may make it a more suitable option for those looking to keep their carbs lower while still getting in a great source of protein.

Will it taste too sweet? We've kept it light on purpose, because many people share with us that while taking GLP-1 therapies, they find flavours more intensely sweet than usual. And no. Many enjoy the shakes as they are, and enjoy the flexibility of making it their own.

Do I need to be on medication to use it? Not at all. Many people use the Enlighten Me shake to simply get in more protein, or as part of general weight management.

A Closing Thought

Eating well shouldn't be the hardest part of taking a GLP-1. When your appetite changes, the nutrition that you naturally reach for should feel easy, not like one more thing that you need to push through. That was the entire reason that the Enlighten Me Shake came to exist. Something that felt simple to enjoy, easy to finish, and genuinely nourishing, even on the days that you really didn't feel like much.
