Menopausal Weight Gain - Why 430 GP's joined Dr. Angela Kwong's CPD Webinar on Medically Supervised Weight Management for the Perimenopausal Woman

What an incredible response! Over 430 GP's joined us for this evening's continuing professional development webinar run by Myhealth Academy in collaboration with Dr. Angela Kwong on: "Medically Supervised Weight Management for the Peri/menopausal Woman" — and it’s easy to see why.

The world of weight management is evolving fast.

With new pharmacotherapy, evolving surgical options, and lifestyle-based care, both patients and clinicians are looking for clarity in a space that can feel crowded, inconsistent, and at times overwhelming.

This is especially true for women in perimenopause and menopause — a group that has been underserved for far too long.

Many GP's are recognising just how significant the metabolic changes can be during this time. Yet the tools and education to confidently support these women haven’t always kept pace with the science.

What was once learnt at medical school no longer reflects what’s available or what’s possible. And that’s left a gap — one that we, as a community, are starting to fill.

Dr. Angela Kwong, GP and NSW State Lead for the RACGP Specific Interests Group in Obesity Management, led the session with evidence, empathy, and practical insights. She spoke about how relative oestrogen deficiency and oestrogen resistance contribute to central weight gain, and why it's not simply a matter of lifestyle choices.

These are real, cellular changes — and acknowledging that is key to reducing stigma and guiding patients through this next phase of life with compassion and clinical integrity.

We also discussed the broader changes taking place — from the increasing availability of effective medications to the new conversations around hormone replacement therapy, contraception, and the role of the GP in long-term weight management.

The truth is, our profession is being asked to lead in areas that have historically been sidelined. And while that’s a big responsibility, it’s also an opportunity to practice in a way that’s deeply impactful.

Our inbox in flowing with feedback that is both humbling and energising:

“This was the most practical and relevant webinar that I’ve attended this year.”

“Such a clear explanation of metabolic changes in menopause — thank you for validating what so many patients experience.”

“Please run more of these. This is exactly the kind of GP leadership we need in this space.”

If you weren’t able to attend, we’ve got good news — the session was recorded. You can still claim your RACGP CPD points, and we’re happy to provide the details. Just email us at info@enlightenme.com.au and we’ll send everything through.

At Enlighten Me, we’re proud to support both patients and clinicians through this journey.

Whether it’s with our doctor-designed shakes to help nourish the body during the weight loss journey, or through community or clinician education, our mission remains the same: to support sustainable, stigma-free weight management that’s grounded in science and care.

Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged. The future of weight management in primary care looks stronger — and more collaborative — than ever.
