Creative Careers in Medicine 2025: Let’s Create

Medical careers are no longer linear. And that’s a good thing.

This year’s Creative Careers in Medicine (CCIM) Conference brought together doctors, entrepreneurs, educators, researchers and innovators in Melbourne to explore the theme Let’s Create. True to its mission, CCIM once again showed that medicine isn’t a one-way street of hospital rotations and specialist training. It’s a field brimming with possibility, if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.

A community that shapes careers

For Enlighten Me’s founder, Dr Angela Kwong, returning as a speaker was both a privilege and a chance to reflect on the role CCIM has played in shaping her own career. On the panel It Takes a CCIM Village, she joined Dr Izzy Bigio, Dr James Wallace and Dr Elise Putt to discuss how community and collaboration fuel innovation.

Her message was simple:
You don’t always need another degree, an MBA, or extra training. Sometimes, the most transformative thing you can do is simply show up.

Dr Angela Kwong was also a speaker at CCIM 2024, presenting in the Lifestyle Stream on her multidisciplinary approach to weight management care. Reflecting on these two events, she has witnessed firsthand the significance that CCIM carries each year, the chance to connect with peers in person, to collaborate, and to create momentum for impact, purpose and creativity.

Highlights from the weekend

Over two packed days, CCIM 2025 featured thought-provoking panels, breakout sessions and, perhaps most importantly, plenty of conversations in between. Some standout moments included:

  • Dr Preeya Alexander tackling health information and communication, a timely conversation ahead of the Women’s Agenda Health & Wellbeing Summit. (hyperlink the URL to the Misinformation blog post)
  • A/Prof Fiona Brownfoot and Dr Sachin B Patel sharing entrepreneurial journeys that continue to inspire clinicians to think beyond traditional paths.
  • Dr Michael Bonning reminding delegates: “Tell the story, don’t BE the story” when engaging with the media.
  • Dr Ariella Heffernan-Marks, speaking with purpose on equal representation of women in research data.

Why CCIM matters

While the formal sessions were rich with ideas, what many attendees valued most were the informal catch-ups, introductions and unexpected sparks of collaboration. CCIM provides the space for non-traditional careers to be celebrated, ideas to be validated, and projects to be born.

Since CCIM 2024, our team has witnessed this firsthand. Community members have connected at events, recorded podcasts together, and championed creative projects. This momentum matters because it reaffirms that medicine is more than a job. It is a platform for impact, purpose and creativity.
