A Refreshing Earl Grey Tea Shake Recipe

A Refreshing Earl Grey Tea Shake Recipe

There’s something quietly delightful about finding a new flavour combination that feels both nourishing and refreshing.Β One of the reasons our community loves using the Enlighten Me ShakesΒ creatively is their lightly flavoured, adaptable base. The Vanilla blend, in particular, is often described as a high-protein milk substitute – gentle, neutral and easy to customise.

Today, we’re sharing a recipe that brings together the elegance of Earl Grey tea with the smooth creaminess of ourΒ vanilla shake. It’s aromatic, satisfying, and a beautiful option for those who enjoy flavour without excessive sweetness.

The Story Behind Earl Grey Tea

Earl Grey Tea has a fascinating history. Traditionally, it is a black tea infused with oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange. Its name is widely believed to honour Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who served as British Prime Minister in the 1830s.

Unlike pure, single-plant teas such as jasmine or green tea, Earl Grey is technically aΒ flavouredΒ tea. The bergamot oil gives it its signature character – a floral, citrusy and slightly bitter aroma that makes it instantly recognisable.

Β

Where the Flavour Comes From

The tea base in Earl Grey typically comes fromΒ Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to produce black, green and oolong teas. The addition of bergamot – a citrus fruit grown mainly in southern Italy, particularly Calabria – is what sets Earl Grey apart. Its uplifting, fragrant oil creates a refreshing aroma that pairs beautifully with lightly flavoured foods and beverages.

A Helpful Option During a Weight Loss Journey

For many individuals taking GLP-1's, taste changes are common – particularly an increased sensitivity to sweetness. When Dr Angela Kwong originally formulated theΒ Enlighten Me Shakes, she worked side-by-side with patients to test each prototype, ensuring that the flavour profile remained neutral to just slightly sweet.

This was intentional. Many traditional shakes can be quite sweet, which can be overwhelming or trigger cravings for those with a more sensitive palate. A neutral base also supports those who prefer not to stimulate the sweetness–reward pathway.

Adding Earl Grey to the vanilla shake offers beautiful flavour variation without introducing sugar, artificial sweeteners or additional calories. Instead of sweetness, you enjoy flavour through aroma – engaging the senses in a different, gentler way.
