How to Turn Any Cereal Into a High Protein Breakfast
Share
When navigating a weight management journey, often one of the first things to go is cereal or toast.
People often don't feel hungry first thing in the morning, and naturally want to reduce their carbs. But this is often a missed opportunity to start the day well with protein.
Here's a way you can still enjoy any cereal and turn it into a high protein breakfast.
Β
Why It Works
Most cereals are quick, but they're not built to keep you full. They tend to be high in carbohydrate and light on protein, which means blood sugar can rise and fall quickly, and hunger often follows not long after.
Dr Angela often explains it to her patients this way: protein is the macronutrient that does the most to help you feel satisfied after a meal, and it plays an important role in supporting muscle mass when managing your weight. A bowl of cereal with regular milk can give you a small amount of protein, but not a lot. Using the Vanilla Enlighten Me Shake as a milk substitute is a quick and easy way to increase your protein content, while also delivering essential vitamins and minerals to start your day.
The method is simple:
- Add one scoop of the Vanilla Enlighten Me Shake to 150ml of water.
- Mix well until smooth, this becomes your milk substitute.
- Pour it over your cereal of choice, just as you normally would.
That's it. You get the same taste, texture and crunch you're used to, with meaningfully more protein and less carbohydrate than a standard bowl.

Recipe Ideas To Try
-
Rice Bubbles. Light, simple, and the one Dr Angela uses in the video above. A good place to start if you want something familiar.
-
Cornflakes. A classic choice, and it holds its crunch well even after the shake has had a minute to soak in.
-
Muesli or granola. A heartier option with more fibre, worth trying if you want your breakfast to keep you going a little longer into the morning.
-
Bran flakes. Good if you're after extra fibre alongside the protein boost.
High Protein Weet-Bix
This is one of the easiest swaps to make, and probably the most Australian of them all.
Simply prepare your shake as usual, and pour it over two gluten-free Weet-Bix, just as you would with milk. You'll still get that familiar softening as the liquid soaks in, only now it's carrying a lot more protein.
If you like your Weet-Bix softer, try making it the night before. Pour the shake mixture over your gluten-free Weet-Bix, cover, and leave it in the fridge overnight. By morning it's soft, creamy, and ready to go, no need to do anything else before you walk out the door.
Β
Enjoy The Shake On Its Own
It's worth remembering the shake doesn't need cereal at all. On a busier morning, or if you simply feel like something quick, the Vanilla or Chocolate Enlighten Me Shake makes a complete high protein breakfast on its own, mixed with water or your favourite milk.
This keeps things flexible. Some mornings you'll want the crunch of cereal, other mornings you'll just want to shake it up and go.

A Note On Low FODMAP Breakfasts
If you're managing your diet around FODMAPs, portion and ingredients both matter. According to the Monash University FODMAP app, gluten-free Weet-Bix are rated green light (low FODMAP) at a serve of two biscuits, at time of writing, so they're a great option to reach for.
Our Vanilla and Chocolate Enlighten Me Shakes are certified FODMAP Friendly, so whichever cereal you choose, the milk substitute itself isn't something you need to think twice about.
Enlighten Me was created by our founder, Dr Angela Kwong, a Sydney-based GP with a specific interest in weight management and digestive health. It was designed from the start to be genuinely flexible, easy to finish, with 32g of protein per serve and carbohydrates kept consciously low, so it fits into ordinary mornings like this one, whether that's stirred into cereal, poured over Weet-Bix, or enjoyed on its own.

A Few Questions We're Often Asked
Can I use the shake as a milk substitute over any cereal? Yes, the method works with most cereals. Rice Bubbles, cornflakes, muesli, granola and Weet-Bix are all easy places to start.
Is this suitable if I'm following a low FODMAP diet? Our Vanilla and Chocolate shakes are certified FODMAP Friendly. For the cereal, gluten-free Weet-Bix are rated green light on the Monash University FODMAP app at a serve of two biscuits.
Will it change the taste of my cereal? Our vanilla shake has a slightly different flavour to regular milk. But most people find it works well and is still lightly flavoured enough for them to enjoy the cereal they know and love.
Do I need to be on a weight management journey to try this? Not at all. Many people use the Enlighten Me Shake simply to get in more protein, or as an easy addition to their everyday breakfast.
Β
A Closing Thought
Weight management shouldn't mean giving up every food you enjoy, including the small, everyday comfort of a bowl of cereal in the morning. Sometimes the easiest change isn't cutting something out, it's finding a simple swap that makes it a little more sustainable.
