Accessible GP Education Opens Conversations and Improves Access to Care

The Conversations That Matter Most

The most important conversations in healthcare don’t always happen in lecture theatres.

They happen quietly.

In consult rooms.

Between patients.

In the moments where someone finally feels ready to ask a question they’ve been holding onto.

For many, that first conversation about weight is the hardest one to have.

Β

Why GP Education Matters for Patients

When we talk about GP education, it can sound like something that only matters to clinicians.

But in reality, it shapes the experience of every patient who walks into a room.

Because when education is accessible, conversations become easier.

  • Less rushed
  • Less judgemental
  • More grounded in understanding
  • Easier to start

It builds a common language.

Not about right or wrong - but about working things out together.

And that’s often where stigma begins to soften.

Β

Shift in How GPs Are Learning

Recently, over 7,000 GPs chose to download a podcast episode focused on managing GLP-1 medications - covering side effects, nutrition, and the practical realities that come with them.

Not because they had to.

Because they wanted to.

In their own time.
Between patients.
On the drive home.

That tells us something important.

GPs are actively looking for answers to the same questions many patients are asking:

  • What happens when appetite changes?
  • How do we manage side effects in a sustainable way?
  • What does nutrition look like during this process?

These are real-world questions.

And in a space where medications are still relatively new, and formal guidelines are evolving, there is a growing need for practical, experience-led learning.

Not just theory.

But what actually works in the consult room.

Β

A Quiet Milestone

Dr Angela Kwong was recently honoured to receive the 2026 General Practice Education Impact Award from General Practice Clinical Sessions.

This recognition reflects the reach of that same episode - downloaded by over 7,000 GPs in a single month.

To put that into perspective, that’s comparable to a significant proportion of the practising GP workforce across Victoria.

But more importantly, it reflects something deeper.

A willingness from clinicians to continue learning.
To seek ongoing ways to support their patients.

Β

Learning That Reflects Real Practice

There’s something powerful about peer-led education.

No script.
No perfect conditions.
Just honest conversations grounded in real clinical experience.

Because weight management - especially when medications like GLP-1s are involved - is rarely straightforward.

It’s:

  • medical
  • nutritional
  • behavioural
  • and deeply personal

And it often requires a multidisciplinary approach.

The more we can share these insights openly, the more we support consistency in care - no matter where someone is seen.

Β

Access Works Both Ways

At Enlighten Me, around 40% of the patients we support live in rural and remote regions.

For many, access to care isn’t just about availability.

It’s about practicality.

Time.
Distance.
Flexibility.

Digital care has helped bridge that gap for patients.

And now, we’re seeing the same shift happen in GP education.

Learning that fits around real life.
Not separate from it.

Β

Our Role in the Bigger Picture

We don’t aim to treat everyone.

And we know we can’t.

As a small, multidisciplinary team, our role is simply to contribute where we can.

Sometimes that’s through direct care.

And sometimes, it’s by sharing what we’re learning - so other GPs can support their own patients with greater confidence.

Because GPs are best placed to provide continuity of care.

We’re here to support that.

Not replace it.

Β

Where Practical Support Fits In

In many of these conversations - particularly around GLP-1 medications - nutrition becomes one of the biggest challenges.

Appetite changes.
Food tolerance shifts.
Routine becomes harder to maintain.

This is where simple, practical tools can help.

For some, that might include options like the Enlighten Me Shakes - not as a replacement for whole food, but as a way to support protein intake and consistency when things feel more difficult.

Nothing complicated.

Just something that fits into real life.

Β

Closing Reflection

There’s something powerful in keeping things real.

In sharing openly.
In learning as we go.

And in knowing that even small shifts - in understanding, in language, in confidence - can make a meaningful difference to the person sitting across from us.

Because when conversations open, care becomes more accessible.

And that’s where change begins.
